The phrase “Grande Remise” which is prior to VTC (Voiture de Transport avec Chauffeur in French), originated in Paris, at the Louvre – which was then the King’s palace.
Back in those days, the coach drivers would wait before the palace so as to quickly carry out the King’s trips or the court’s in spite of the traffic jam that already existed.
To fix this situation, coach drivers were to be waiting inside the walls of the palace and were divided into different sheds. According to the importance of the passengers, these had access to a Grande or Petite Remise.
Ever since, this phrase has remained in the French language and still refers to companies with private drivers specialized in luxury cars.
In 1921, thanks to Maurice Chabé, the profession started to organize in a modern way. He created the first top of the range service for transporting people. His services targeted the wealthy clientele of the Parisian palaces.
Only thirty years later, in 1955, did the first regulations appear to supervise the profession.
